Keeping it Green Roll Call

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

Today was the second day, and first class of our Keeping it Green Challenge.  Don and I rode our bike to and from class as our inspiration in making a difference.  It is about 14 miles round trip, and a total “gas” to do it.  I love biking and doing it again this morning reminds me of the pleasure (and pain) of peddling through nature.  I loved listening to the wind in my ears, the birds singing me on and seeing the beauty that we live in, and I’d like to see conserved.

So this week what can you do that makes a difference.  It can be something very simple, but together it becomes HUGE!  All we are asking is all this week you do something different.  You can do one thing, or a different thing everyday.  Maybe it will inspire others.  Maybe you’ll do it longer than a week.  We enact transformation when we awaken our awareness and commit to a new action.

Here is the roll call so far of the creative and simple ways we can all make a difference:

Lisa E using stainless steel water bottle only and wrap n mat for sandwiches.

Shannon O shopping locally and recycling

Christa using my recycle grocery bags EVERY TIME for the next year.

Brendan recycling

Nancy biking to class- day one was awesome!

Jenn F is keeping the air set at 78 during the day and closing the blinds to guard against the afternoon sun.

Susan M will not be using paper towels.

Carol D will walk or ride her bike to class, and bring her reusable water bottle

Ann C will not be eating meat

Linda B buying a recycle bin for the family business – forever green.

Pam W start composting.

Adrienne S not use paper towels.

Maxine R use a reusable container for her water source.

Don biking to class.

Laure G riding bike to yoga

Vickie V hand washing dishes.

Nannette W bicycling to the beach/pool with my daughter.

What will you do?  Be inspired by others!

Keeping it Green

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Calling all yoga students, Cape Cod, Key West and beyond.  Yoga on the Beach has a one week challenge for you.  Starting Aug 1- Aug 7 we’d like to inspire you to change something in your life that will diminish your eco footprint on planet Earth.

That’s right we’d like you to take your yoga practice off the mat (is it a green one?) and into your life by connecting up to Mother Earth.  Think beyond your “usual” and come to other possibilities.  Stretch your habits, breath fresh air while saying more please.

There are so many ways to approach this challenge.  You can start by thinking about what you most cherish and would like to honor about our beautiful planet.  Water, Air, Trees, our woodland friends can inspire you to make a difference.  What can you do that lessens the stress on them?

Here are a few ideas:

  • Walk or ride your bike to yoga class
  • Car pool with a friend, or two
  • Recycle your old mat
  • Say no to plastic (oil product)
  • Educate yourself about your landfill
  • Compost

You get the idea, there are endless possibilities, and we can’t wait to see how creative you can be.
So keep us posted on what you are doing to change your footprint by leaving a comment on our blog, or fill out a card at class.  Need more help check out The Green Guide or GLEE.  If you are in Mashpee check out The Green Design store in Mashpee Commons (Stop and Shop side).   We need to change our ways to make a difference.   United we make greater.

New Seabury Greening Up

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Recycle                Reuse          Renew                  Reduce

One of my passions on this planet is awareness to Green living.  I first became aware of it in the 70s with the oil crisis, and then a trip to Aruba in the late 80s catapulted me into my path of recycling.  Each time our planet experiences a public crisis of mismanagement, indulgence or greed we become aware of how we live and the limited resources of our planet.  What choices can we make that help our planet sustain its beauty, and balance?

Let’s start by reaching out to our community, wherever you live.  I know we have students who live all over the US, and beyond.  So as I write about the Cape Cod community, may you take it to heart and home.

Memorial Day weekend was a delightful kick off for our yoga season, and summer.  The weather was spectacular, and so many came out to play and practice with us.  I noticed that the trash barrels were full, and was saddened by the lack of recycling options.

This morning I decided to go beyond the feeling of “lack” and look into it.  I called New Seabury and was directed to Amy Buckley, Administrative Assistant to GM.  We had a great chat and she shared with me that she had just ordered recycling bins for the beach club.  The kitchens have been recycling for years, including recycling the fryolator oil for reuse.  Great news!

Now it is our turn.  Recycle your plastic bottles, or bring your own reusable water bottles to class or to the beach.  USE THE BINS for your cardboard, cans and plasticware.  Consider bringing cloth napkins and silverware to wash back home to reduce the amount of throw away products you are using.  As each of us reduces our usage, recycles what we use, reuses products again and again, and renew our commitment to this daily, WE MAKE A DIFFERNCE!

Here is to BEING the difference we wish to see in our community, our children, our planet.
